In the world of mass production and click-to-ship, our clients sometimes can’t even imagine what custom means in 2025.
We take this for granted because everything with Stonescapes has always been custom. Every site is unique, so every stone job is unique.
How will the new addition accent the landscape features?
How will it integrate with any existing gardens, patios or walls?
What are the logistics of installation at the particular site?
What materials will work best to fulfill the client’s vision and meet their budget?
We don’t use any prefabricated materials in our work. We don’t have a catalog you can order from.
But we do have over 20 years of experience working with stone and lots of ideas to share with you.

Getting to Heck YES!
Sometimes our clients have a clear picture in mind or a reference photo of what they want in a stonescape or stone engraving. Other times a client has a concept or they know they want something but aren’t quite sure what.
In this design and exploration phase, we’re coaching clients towards clarity and specificity.
We ask a lot of questions, listen carefully, ask follow-up questions, listen some more, drilling down until we get to that moment of “Yes! That’s it!” Sometimes it takes a few iterations of a design concept until we arrive there.
If clients need ideas or inspiration, we have a robust online portfolio of our work (here, here, and here), as well as a physical portfolio of previous work in our shop. Sometimes just seeing what’s possible gets the creative wheels turning.
Getting it right.
Stone engraving often represents something deeply personal for a client, whether we’re creating a memorial stone for a loved one, a commemoration of a special date like a marriage or anniversary, or residential or commercial signage. Getting the design right takes on extra significance.
We start with the qualities of the stone itself, which becomes the canvas for the design. Some stones are better suited for fine art pieces for your garden rather than a commercial sign for your business.
We talk with our clients about the factors to consider when choosing typeface. For example, there are different considerations for choosing typeface and character size for a residential address marker than for a memorial stone.
The total number of words or characters on the stone also leads to questions about placement, character size, and line width.
With visual graphics, there are some limitations in the engraving process for how much detail we can convey. But there are also ways to render the design in stone so that there’s dimensionality and texture, which adds depth to the image.
We’re old school about the design phase. We like to meet in person with clients, with plenty of time to explore all these details, because taking our time with you at this phase saves time and money later.
Everything on the face of that stone matters. We’re here to get it right.
What can we design with you?
Whether it’s a stonescape element for your garden, new steps to your patio, or an engraved memorial stone for a beloved family member or pet, your project will be a custom job from start to finish.
